- Detroit City Council Member At Large Mary Waters a Dem candidate for Congress 13th District and Hill Harper, Dem candidate for U.S. Senate, will hold a joint press conference to announce the opening of a Detroit GOTV headquarters tomorrow, Thursday June 27, at 10:00 AM on the Avenue of Fashions 19158 Livernois.
“I will be honored to work with my fellow Cancer Survivor Hill Harper to get out a vote that traditional Dem party leadership is incapable of delivering ,” said Breast Cancer Survivor Waters who represents more Black voters than any other Black woman in Michigan holding a municipal office with budgetary oversight because Waters is one of only two council members that represent the entire City of Detroit beyond a district.
The Michigan Black Mayors Chairman Marcus Muhammad echoed Waters’ concerns. “We have been subjected to ‘selected not elected’ politics for too long. It is time for us to work for us,” said Benton Harbor Mayor Muhammad.i
Harper says that there is hard work ahead. “The challenges ahead as we rebuild a party that takes us for granted are many; but we will make this Michigan Democratic party stronger by organizing and doing the work that generates voter turnout,” said Harper.
Waters’ political consultant Sam Riddle did not mince words. “Michigan Democrats wallow in privileged arrogance that permeates disconnected Democratic Party leadership nationally and may diminish Black voter turnout for the presidential election,” said the veteran consultant.

Waters asking Chief White to come to Council to discuss Cinco de Mayo early shutdown
(Detroit, MI 5/6/2024) - Detroit City Council Member At Large Mary Waters wants to know if the early militaristic shut down of Cinco de Mayo activities was a reflection of racist xenophobic double standards not employed during NFL Draft crowd control.
“I am requesting that Detroit Police Chief White appear before Detroit City Council to discuss the successful crowd control associated with NFL Draft activities involving 275,000 attendees daily and the seemingly inability of DPD to handle much smaller crowds during Cinco de Mayo activities in Southwest Detroit this weekend,” said Waters.
“Cinco de Mayo is the equivalent of a National Holiday to our Latina residents.
The economic damage to businesses and the psychological hurt inflicted upon residents and visitors to Southwest Detroit must be addressed.
We must ensure that racist xenophobic double standards were not reflected in the early militaristic shutdown of Cinco de Mayo activities,” said Waters.
Waters request is in today’s “escribe” Detroit Council notes.

Detroit Council Member Waters “uncommitted” for presidential primary
(Detroit, MI 2/19/2024) - Detroit City Councilwoman At-Large Mary Waters who represents more Black voters than any other Black woman holding municipal elective office with budgetary oversight in Michigan has joined other Michigan officeholders in pledging to vote “uncommitted” in the Michigan Presidential Primary February 27.
Waters says that her decision to vote “uncommitted” is rooted in the anti-war philosophy of Martin Luther King Jr.
“This Michigan primary is when we must let a stagnant Democratic Party hear us say “Stop The Killing!” We must not be silent when babies are being killed with weapons and dollars provided by America. Yes, all hostages must be freed immediately, and President Biden must force a ceasefire now in Gaza by refusing to send dollars used for killing children and innocent human beings. We need to cut the Pentagon War budget and use those dollars for safe streets in America by funding community police foot patrols and fighting poverty while increasing social security payments for our seniors,” said Waters.
Waters, a Breast Cancer Survivor and graduate of the University of Michigan, was the first Black woman to serve as Dem Floor Leader when Waters served in the Michigan House of Representatives where Waters had a perfect attendance record and was then State Representative Gretchen Whitmer’s Floor Leader.
